Not all white spots on your guppy mean Ich. One of the most common mistakes fish keepers make — even experienced ones — is confusing Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis) with Epistylis, a protozoan that looks similar but requires an entirely different treatment approach. Misdiagnosing one for the other can waste time, money, and more importantly, cost fish their lives.
Here at The Guppy Father, we’re breaking down how to spot the difference and what Fritz products to use for each.
What Is Ich?
Ich, or white spot disease, is a parasite that burrows into a fish’s skin and gills, causing serious irritation. It’s one of the most common freshwater diseases and is often triggered by stress, temperature swings, or sudden water changes.
Symptoms of Ich:
-
Distinct white dots (like grains of salt or sugar) on body, fins, and gills
-
Flashing (rubbing against surfaces)
-
Labored breathing or staying near the surface
-
May stop eating or hide more than usual
Key Characteristics:
-
Spots are usually uniform and evenly spaced
-
Starts on fins, spreads to body
-
Short lifecycle - spreads fast
What Is Epistylis?
Epistylis is a protozoan, but unlike Ich, it doesn’t feed on your fish — it feeds on bacteria growing on the fish’s skin. That’s why it often appears when water quality is poor or after using antibiotics. The presence of Epistylis is a red flag that something is already wrong in the tank.
Symptoms of Epistylis:
-
White or greyish tufts on body or fins (often confused with Ich)
-
No flashing or gill distress early on
-
Often appears near head, back, or dorsal fin
-
Spots look fuzzy or crusty, not clean grains
Key Characteristics:
-
Lesions may appear slightly raised or scab-like
-
Often affects weaker or already ill fish
-
Doesn’t respond to Ich medication
How to Treat Each Condition (Using Only Fritz Products)
Ich Treatment:
-
Fritz Mardel Coppersafe - Proven anti-parasitic for Ich
-
Raise temperature to 82–84°F to speed parasite lifecycle
-
Use Fritz A.C.C.R. to detoxify ammonia during treatment
-
Continue treatment for 10–14 days, even after spots disappear
Epistylis Treatment:
-
Fritz Maracyn (or Maracyn Two) - Targets bacterial growth
-
Improve water quality with daily partial water changes
-
Add FritzZyme 7 to re-establish beneficial bacteria
-
Optional: Add Fritz Aquarium Salt to support healing
Important: Ich medications like Coppersafe won’t work on Epistylis. If you're unsure, treat for both with Maracyn first and observe before introducing copper.
Prevention Tips from The Guppy Father
-
Quarantine all new fish for 2–4 weeks
-
Test water regularly and maintain clean, cycled tanks
-
Avoid overcrowding and overfeeding
-
Use Fritz Complete or FritzGuard for every water change
-
Consider adding UV sterilization if you have recurring outbreaks
Final Thoughts
If your guppy shows white spots, don’t jump straight to Ich meds — take a moment to look closer. Knowing the difference between Ich and Epistylis can mean the difference between a full tank recovery or a frustrating loss.
At The Guppy Father, our fish are raised in stable, fully cycled systems with regular water testing and a strong quarantine process — so they arrive healthy and disease-free. But once they’re in your tank, knowledge is your best tool.
